To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven Betty Joe Mason Sumner was born March 12, 1949, in Carlise, MS, Claiborne County, Mississippi, to Amos and Ethel Mae Mason. She was the eighth child of 14 children. “And a time to learn and teach” Betty Joe began her education at Elm Grove Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School and later joined the Job Corp. “And the Lord God said, it is not good that man should be alone…” Betty Joe married Walter Sumner in Fall of 1980 on September 15th in the great state of Louisiana. She was blessed with a loving family where she became the matriarch of the family. She raised five children: Tenecia Mason, Tasha Sumner,Titus Sumner, Terica Sumner and Teraya Sumner. “A time to plant” She confessed Christ in her young adult years. Betty Joe was a unique person with flair and style. She was compassionate, outspoken and truly loved the Lord, family and friends. She had an old fashion work ethic, very passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and everyone she met. Betty Joe worked and retired from Duzet Nursery after 25 years of service. “A time to mourn” She was preceded in death by her parents; Amos and Ethel Mae Mason; her husband, Walter Sumner and siblings, Earl Sherman Mason and Melvin “Main” Mason. “And time to die” Betty Joe departed this life on November 15, 2015 at her home in Houston, Texas. She was a long time resident of Marrero, Louisiana until she decided to relocate after hurricane Katrina. “A time of peace” She is now at peace and resting in the redemptive love of the Lord Jesus Christ, and will continue to live in the heart of those who knew and loved him.“I will not leave you comfortless” Betty Joe leaves to cherish her memories five beautiful children; Tenecia Mason, Tasha Sumner, Titus Sumner, all of Marrero, LA, Terica Sumner, of Houston, TX and Teraya Sumner of Jackson, MS., seven grandchildren; Tajanae Jones, Angel Davis, Titus Sumner Jr., Jamarie Williams, Alaysia Williams, Morgan Sumner, and Serenity Craft. One great grandson; Jace Jones; four sisters; Marilyn (Willie) Taylor, of Marrero, LA, Eva Nell Wilson, of Killeen, TX, Mary Mason Wiley, of Harvey, LA, and Margie Lawson of Pearl, MS, five brothers; LV Mason, Eugene (Rose) Mason both of Harvey, LA, Charles (Linda) Mason, Larry (Ursula) Mason of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Perry (Renata) Mason of Germany; one aunt, Mattie (Earl) Jackson of Jackson, MS, one uncle; John L. (Julia) Hawkins of Killeen, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
