Debra Diann Umoja was born September 17, 1954 in Lake Charles, LA to Nancine Goffney & Willie Jones. At the age of five her family moved to Lufkin, TX and shortly after she was taken into the care of her late Aunt Alberta Garrett in Diboll, TX.
In 1973, she graduated from Diboll High School, afterwards earning her associates degree at Fresno Community College. During her early 20s she met Muntu Umoja, later they wed, moved to Fort Worth, TX where she went to be with her Father on Saturday, July 30, 2022. She is preceded by her parents, her daughter, Zanaa Umoja, brothers Willie Jones & Roy Davis, Sr.
Debra loved to be a servant of her Father, The Creator as she called him, following the moon cycles & studying his word was her way of staying in tune with The Most High. She knew her purpose was to help as many as she could and she did just that! She loved to be with her children & grandchildren, passing along the word and healthy tips to anyone she felt needed it. To her, encountering a stranger was just another opportunity to spread her love, rather it be a scripture or health advice.
She is survived by her husband, Muntu Umoja, daughter-Mary Umoja, Sons-Emosha Umoja (Nakia U.), King James Umoja, Muntu Umoja II, Malcolm Umoja & Xavier Umoja, brothers-John Wayne Smith, & Eddie Garrett, sisters-Lois Wright, Nancy Jones, Brenda & Linda Goffney, her grandchildren & a great grandchild, host of nieces & nephews
