Pastor Joe L. Butler, Sr. was born in Clarksville, Texas on June 23, 1937, to the
parentage of Anderson John Butler and Charlie Bell Edwards. He attended and
graduated from IM Terrell High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
Pastor Joe enjoyed music and was a key vocalist in the 60s with a group known
as The Vells. His musical talents were passed on to his children who are all
gifted psalmists and musicians.
A comedian at heart and a powerful man of God, Pastor Joe always saw the
good in others. He believed that every soul was worth saving. Pastor Joe was a
father to hundreds of children, to include as all his nephews, nieces,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Always a leader, Never a follower -
unless it was for Christ, Pastor Joe was a true hero. He was a powerful General
in the Army of the Lord who was loved by all who came in contact with him. One
of his favorite sayings was “Let’s Go!”
On August 19, 2024, Pastor Joe entered eternal rest. He is preceded in death by
his parents, Anthony (son), Joe Jr. II (son), James Butler (brother), and Edith
Hughes (sister).
Pastor Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Beverly, sons Cleo, Joe (Maryum),
Tim, and Chris Channing; daughters, Nethra Butler-Cox (John), Kaylon Reed,
Karen Reed, Cethra, and Myra Butler-Clinkscales (Calvin); over 100
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and a host of
nieces, nephews and friends.
